Gas Boiler

Gas Boiler

The Gas Boiler that heats the indoor swimming pool is the original and so is now 24 years old.  It has worked well but its now time to consider a replacement and in the last 24 years great progress has been made in more energy efficient systems, including electric and heat pumps.

Here’s a clear explanation of how our current gas-powered pool-heating system works, and what’s involved in converting it to an electric/heat pump.

✅ 1. What We Currently Have — Identifying the Three Components

① Ferroli Gas Boiler

This is the main gas-fired boiler, likely a floor-standing high-output unit.
Its job is to:

  • Heat water using natural gas/propane

  • Pump hot water into the heat-exchange circuit that warms the pool

These units were commonly installed in Spain for community pool heating because they deliver high thermal output quickly.

② IdroGas (Salvador Escoda) Buffer/Accumulator Tank

This is not the heater but the thermal storage tank (also called an accumulator or buffer).

Its purpose:

  • Store a large volume of heated water

  • Reduce boiler cycling (switching on/off)

  • Stabilise temperature and system pressure

  • Supply hot water steadily to the heat exchanger for the pool circuit

This tank also often includes:

  • A pressure gauge

  • Safety valve

  • Pipe connections for boiler → tank → pool heat exchanger

③ Baxi Control Unit / Secondary Heater

This looks like a Baxi control module or small auxiliary heater, possibly used for:

  • Controlling temperature set points

  • Managing pumps and sensors

  • Acting as a backup heating source

It’s typical in community systems to have a gas boiler + accumulator tank + controls rather than one single device.

✅ 2. How the System Works (Summary)

  1. The Ferroli gas boiler heats water.

  2. Hot water flows into the IdroGas accumulator tank, storing heat.

  3. A heat exchanger (likely located near the pool pumps) transfers heat from the hot tank water to the pool water.

  4. The Baxi controls manage temperature, pumps, safety cut-offs, and timers.

  5.

✅ 3. Replacing This With an Electric System

Yes—this is absolutely possible. Many communities in Spain are now replacing gas boilers with:

⭐ Heat Pump Systems (Highly Recommended)

These are electric but ~4× more efficient than an electric resistance boiler.

  • For every 1 kW of electricity, they produce 3–5 kW of heat.

  • Perfect match for solar PV as well because they run efficiently at low power.

Typical brands used in Spain:

  • AstralPool

  • Fairland

  • Hayward

  • Therma V (LG)

  • Mitsubishi Ecodan

For a community pool you’d normally need 1 large commercial heat pump or 2–3 mid-size heat pumps in parallel.

⭐ Option: Electric Resistance Boiler (Not recommended unless necessary)

Pros: simple, cheap installation
Cons: very expensive to run, even on solar, and usually underpowered for a large indoor pool.

⭐ Recommended Solution: Replace Gas Boiler With Heat Pump(s)

This approach gives you:

Advantages:

✔ Uses electricity, so compatible with your urbanisation’s solar plans
✔ 80% lower running costs vs gas
✔ Much safer: no gas, no flue, no combustion
✔ Lower maintenance
✔ Works especially well for indoor pools (stable temperatures)

🔧 4. What You’d Need to Replace

A. Remove

  • Ferroli gas boiler

  • Gas lines and flue system

  • Baxi auxiliary heater (depending on its function)

B. Keep

  • The accumulator/buffer tank (can still be useful)

  • Pool pumps

  • Heat exchanger (may need upsizing depending on new heat pump flow rates)

  • Pipework

C. Add

  • 1 or more commercial pool heat pumps

  • Electrical supply upgrades (3-phase if not already available)

  • New digital control system (often included with modern heat pumps)

✔️ Final Summary

Your system consists of:

  • Gas boiler (Ferroli) – primary heat source

  • Accumulator tank (Idrogas) – heat storage

  • Baxi controller/heater – temperature & pump management

Replacing gas with heat pumps powered by electricity is the best long-term solution for your urbanisation. It will dramatically reduce costs and eliminate reliance on gas.
